Reducing Child Poverty is one of the big challenges facing Wigan. Children and Young People in the Borough are only too aware of the impact of not having enough money for basics and the impact this can have on their lives. Poverty isn't just about a lack of material goods but it also has an effect on health, education and the ability to participate in leisure and community life. The Wigan child poverty strategy has been produced after a detailed child poverty needs assessment and contains locality level information about where the problems are most concentrated. The strategy has led to a number of pledges by the key agencies in Wigan to try and reduce the numbers of families in poverty and to reduce the impact of poverty on children and young people.
