Working with parents/carers who use substances and/or alcohol

This protcol is intended for any agency that works with parents, carers, pregnant women and their partners who use drugs/alcohol. Professionals from the various agencies in the Borough have different roles in unnecessary to one reader but be informative to another relation to drug/alcohol issues, and child protection issues; therefore, certain information may see tackling drug/alcohol use and the impact on children is a high priority for Wigan Building Stronger Communities Partnership, Wigan Children’s Trust and Wigan Safeguarding Children Board (WSCB).

This protocol is relevant to all services that come into contact with children and families, particularly those working with parents / carers who misuse drugs / alcohol.

This protocol has been developed and ratified by all substance misuse providers, Wigan Children’s Services Social Care Department and commissioners. The protocol evidences agencies commitment to safeguarding children and young people who live with parents / carers who misuse drugs which leads to the child / young person needing to be safeguarded from presenting risk(s).
